Symbolism

The crest of a crow proper symbolizes both knowledge and the goddess of war, the Morrigan, of Gaelic mythology.
The 4 argent mullets represent the 4 cardinal directions, as a nod to the armigers family trade of surveying, as well as the 4 virtues of Stoic philosophy.
The engrailed styling of the cross pays homage to the same styling of the cross in the arms attributed to Henry Hudson the Explorer, who is an alleged distant uncle in the armiger's surname line.
The colour of the cross being gules symbolizes the same color used in the St. George cross.
The quill and sword in a saltire symbolize their life philosophy of being well-rounded both intellectually and athletically.
The motto of “Stilum et Gladium” translates roughly to “Pen and Sword” reflecting the charges above.
