Symbolism
The serpentines represent the waves of the North Sea.
The two roundels are part of the top of the „Kugelbake“, the symbol of the armigers home town. This monument, constructed of wood, was used as kind of nautical landmark to guide ships. The crest: The king fisher is one of the local birds in their hometown area. In Germany the king fisher is called: "Ice bird" and one part of the armigers family name is the word: col.
The king fisher is a small bird and to get better proportions they just used the hat to bring him a bit up. No specific hat for artists freedom.
